Icelandic volcano threatens animal life

The infamous cloud caused by the eruption of the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull, grabbed the headlines mainly because they are holding in check the European air traffic, could also have repercussions on the health of horses living in Iceland.

The Authority Icelandic Food and Veterinary, issued guidelines for owners of horses and cattle in order to protect their health. The animals most at risk are obviously those who live outdoors, especially in the region of Rangárvallasýsla.

Veterinarians warned that among the substances that make up the cloud there is a fluorinated substance, a factor which may cause damage to bones and teeth. Furthermore, it can corrode teeth and horses hooves.

Animals should be moved to stables, or otherwise protected, and given something to eat and drink covered, making sure that the forage and water are not contaminated by ash.
