Brazil’s Zanotelli saves the best for last to win Bordeaux (VIDEO)
Brazil’s Marlon Zanotelli produced a breathtaking last-to-go run with VDL Edgar to win tonight’s 13th and penultimate leg of the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ 2022/2023 Western European League in Bordeaux, France.
A total of 17 horse-and-rider combinations qualified for the jump-off against the clock and it was a fast and furious, with Swiss young-gun, 23-year-old Edouard Schmitz, looking set to clinch it with his super-fast time of 35.72 seconds with Quno.
But Tokyo Olympian Zanotelli shaved 0.33 seconds off that with a spectacular run from his 14-year-old chestnut gelding.
Third place went to the reigning double world champions from Sweden, Henrik von Eckermann and King Edward, while Britain’s Harry Charles (Balou du Reventon) and Scott Brash (Hello Jefferson) claimed fourth and fifth ahead of Germany’s Daniel Deusser (Scuderia 1918 Tobago Z) in sixth spot.
Tonight’s result leaves Zanotelli in sight of qualification for the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ Final 2023 which will take place in Omaha (USA) from 4 to 8 April. Just one more qualifying opportunity for riders in the Western European League series remains, at Gothenburg (SWE) on 26 February.
