Hong Kong on alert for Tropical Cyclone

The Hong Kong Observatory has issued a storm warning as a tropical cyclone bears down.

At 10am, Severe Tropical Storm Kammuri was centred about 140km south-southwest of Hong Kong, and is forecast to move west-northwest and edge closer to Hong Kong.

Gale force winds are affecting the territory with storm force winds over offshore waters and high grounds. Local wind is changing from northeast to southeast. Areas previously sheltered from the winds will become exposed.

Residents and visitors have been warned to take precautions, including staying away from windows and reinforcing them if possible.

In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Waglan Island, Sai Kung and Cheung Chau were 83, 66 and 87 kilometres per hour respectively.
