World Polo Tour classifies First Portugal Polo Open

The success of the recent First Portugal Polo Open held in between 12 to 14 July in Santo Estevao, in which La Varzea Polo Team was victorious, allows this team to be placed within the international ranking of The World Polo Tour.

This Open was also distinguished as one of the best ever organized in terms of Prize Money on a European scale.

In this first Portugal Polo Open, the World Polo Tour attributed to the La Varzea team 40 points winners of the Golden Cup, 20 points to the team members who were 2nd, and ten points for the team in 3rd place. The attribution of these points allows each player to integrate and evolve in this international ranking. The Golden Cup of this first Open was categorized as a “Challenger Cup”.

“We are all very proud to be entering the international Polo ranking, since it is the first large international tournament that we organize, and we’ve been given 40 points, which represents a very high level of recognition, especially if we compare to Sotogrande which has been existing for 30 years and is evaluated on 90 points!” says Tiago Gallego, President of the La Varzea Polo Club and Captain of the team La Varzea, winner of the triple crown.

The La Varzea Polo Club is the only Polo Club in Portugal and its main goal is to develop this sport that only has 30 players on a national scale. The organization of this first Polo Open made it possible a competition with a high level of game, with the participation of argentine players in the teams, such as Gerardo Manzzini (6 handicaps), Horácio Echeverry (6 handicaps), Sebastian Harriot (7 handicaps), Eduardo Zorrilla (6 handicaps) e Enrique Zorrilla (5 handicaps).

This is the sole international entity accredited in qualifying polo.
