Arc heroine Zarkava produces first foal

The Aga Khan's exceptional mare Zarkava gave birth to her first foal at 9.30pm on Saturday evening. The new arrival is a grey filly by Gilltown Stud stallion Dalakhani.

Pat Downes, the Irish manager of the Aga Khan Studs, was onhand to witness the foaling and described the foal as “a lovely individual that is correct, strong and full of quality”.

He added: “It was a straightforward foaling and Zarkava has proved herself to be a good mother. The Dalakhani filly is a good size for a first foal.”

Zarkava confirmed herself as one of the best fillies of recent times by remaining unbeaten in seven races, five at Group 1 level, including the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches, Prix de Diane and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

The five-year-old daughter of Zamindar is set to be covered by Sea The Stars this year.
