Interagro the World’s Largest Breeder of the Lusitano Horse
Interagro commenced its breeding programme in 1975 in Brasil and today is the largest stud farm for Lusitano horses in the world.
The Lusitano is a breed native to Portugal, steeped in the tradition of its historical links to the military, bullfighting and the classical training methods of the “Haute École”. Today Lusitanos are also recognized for their ability to perform well in a variety of modern-day equestrian disciplines.
John Whitaker and his partner, the Lusitano Novilheiro, were highly successful in the show jumping world of the 80s. A team of purebred Lusitanos won the four-in-hand class at the 1996 World Driving Championships in Belgium – a further example of the talent and versatility of this breed.
In Brazil Interagro Lusitanos are being carefully bred from selected bloodlines. With the cooperation of Portuguese breeders and consequent import of valuable mares and stallions, the stud preserves the main lineages of the Lusitano horse. By combining the existing three main lineages the stud is also developing an Interagro bloodline with contemporary equestrian pursuits in mind.
