Paris 2024: Fifth Eventing team title for Great Britain; Germany’s Jung claims individual gold
Great Britain posted a record-breaking fifth Olympic Eventing team victory, and their second in a row, when Laura Collett (London 52), Tom McEwen (JL Dublin) and Rosalind Canter (Lordships Graffalo) grabbed gold at the equestrian venue in Versailles (FRA) today.
With a total combined score of 91.30 after the final Jumping phase, they pinned the hosts from France into silver medal spot. And more history was made when Japan made it on to the podium for the very first time when clinching bronze.
In the tense individual final there was just a single fence separating the top four, and you could hear a pin drop when, lying fourth, team gold medallist Tom McEwen produced yet another spectacular clear round to put the pressure on the remaining three in the medal placings.
His team-mate and fellow Tokyo Games gold medallist Laura Collett stood her ground, and when Australia’s Christopher Burton was also foot-perfect with Shadow Man then only Jung was left to challenge for gold.
And the man who collected back-to-back individual Olympic titles in London in 2012 and again in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 didn’t flinch, bringing Chipmunk FRH home to a mighty roar from the crowd to ensure it was German gold for the fifth time in a row and for the sixth time in the history of the Games.
