Polo: Silver Cup – Portugal triumphs in Sotogrande
The Portuguese team from La Varzea Polo Club won the finals of the Silver Cup in the international tournament at Sotogrande, Spain. The Portuguese team defeated the Xie-Xie team 10 to 9 in an extra chukka, last Wednesday, 15th of August. The next challenge now is to win the Golden Cup. The performance of the La Varzea Polo Team, composed by Tiago Gallego Jr., Diogo Gallego, Esteban Iturrioz and Horácio Echeverri, in the Medium Handicap Tournament of Sotogrande, South of Spain was again remarkable. The Medium Handicap tournament was played by 12 teams, the category with the highest number of participants. Divided in three categories, the tournament received a total of 32 teams, including some of the best polo players of the world. It is the first time that a team with two Portuguese players, Tiago Jr. e Diogo Gallego claims a win in this prestigious and high level tournament, considered as one of the best polo competitions internationally. Esteban Iturrioz and Horácio Echeverry, both excellent professional polo players from Argentina complete the Portuguese team. Sotogrande’s tournament is rated in the world ranking of the World Polo Tour, the finals of the Silver Cup counting for 50 points. This victory of the Portuguese team allows the four players a place in this prestigious ranking since the first Polo Open of Portugal that was held in July at the La Varzea Polo Club. This victory qualifies the Portuguese team “La Varzea” for the Golden Cup that will start next Saturday, 18th of August.
